LOWER SCHOOL CURRICULUM
(KINDERGARTEN - GRADE 4) Our Lower School division provides a structured, yet nurturing and supportive environment where children flourish. One of the most meaningful and far-reaching aspects of the elementary curriculum is the belief that the development of the whole child must be fostered. While a challenging, stimulating, academic curriculum is crucial to the success of our children, careful attention is also given to their social and emotional development. By providing a caring and supportive classroom environment, the students are encouraged to develop independence, a respect for others and a sense of responsibility for themselves. By working both independently and in cooperative groups, our boys and girls develop life-long learning skills. The curriculum emphasizes traditional disciplines, including reading, language arts (e.g. English usage, writing, etc.), math, social studies, science, art, music, computers, Spanish and physical education. Character education is integrated into the general curriculum. Children, through a variety of teaching strategies, learn to explore their world and develop a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. Students are encouraged to utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It is Chatsworth Hills Academy's goal to maximize each child's potential and to prepare them for their role in an ever-changing global community. As the students progress from the primary grades (K-2) to the intermediate grades (3 and 4), they continue to meet the challenges of a stimulating and expansive curriculum. They are provided with an understanding of the world in which they live and with the tools for future success. The concepts introduced in the primary grades are further developed and new concepts and skills are introduced. New ideas are explored and creative solutions to problems are encouraged. Children learn appropriate work habits and become independent and responsible students. Chatsworth Hills Academy encourages students in the intermediate grades to become involved in extra-curricular activities; such as student government, athletics and chorus. Chatsworth Hills Academy is a safe, secure and serene environment where children learn, grow and experience success.
The music program in Kindergarten - Grade 4 affords children the opportunity to become acquainted with a variety of musical instruments, from the Orff instruments at the K -1 level, to piano, recorders and guitar in Grades 2 - 4. Basic music notation, appreciation and orchestral studies are woven into the curriculum along with plenty of seasonal singing. Students in grades 3 and 4 have the opportunity to join our school chorus, which performs throughout the community providing holiday cheer during the winter months. Computers Chatsworth Hills Academy's computer program provides students with the skills necessary for success in a technological world. Children in the Lower School attend computer classes, taught by our computer specialist. Additionally, all grades have computers in their classrooms. Library Chatsworth Hills Academy has a library which houses a collection of over 7,000 books and features a literature based program for preschool through fourth grade. Each class visits the library once a week. The librarian features a different author or genre of literature each month, along with reference and research lessons. Working closely with the classroom teachers, the librarian enhances the curricular program. The library is an integral part of the educational development of students at Chatsworth Hills Academy. Physical Education Students in grades Kindergarten through four have physical education instruction twice a week. Chatsworth Hills Academy's P.E. instructors provide a balanced program of fitness instruction, games and sports while instilling the values of sportsmanship and teamwork. A variety of activities are incorporated into the program, with emphasis placed on participation and effort. Interscholastic sports for intermediate students include flag football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Spanish Spanish instruction in grades Kindergarten through four is designed to provide a basic understanding of the language. Through a variety of activities, students learn vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and proper accent. The building of oral and written language skills is emphasized at each grade level. CHA's Spanish program encourages students to develop an awareness of other cultures and to appreciate the diversity of our world. Back to Top ![]() |
